- It is usually held in the seventh month of pregnancy, though families differ, and some prefer the fifth, eighth or ninth month.
- Most regions have their own version: Dohale Jevan in Maharashtra, Shaadh in Bengal, Valaikappu in Tamil Nadu and Seemantham in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
- Plan everything around the mother-to-be: a daytime slot, a comfortable chair with back support, a cool room, a restroom close by and a short programme.

- Leave out any game about guessing the baby's sex. Keep the games about the parents, the baby's name and the family.
Godh bharai is the Indian baby shower. The name means filling the lap: the women of the family gather around the mother-to-be, bless her and the baby, and fill her lap with fruit, sweets and gifts. It is usually held in the seventh month of pregnancy.
It is one of the gentlest ceremonies in the Indian calendar, and the planning should be gentle too. Every decision, from the venue to the menu to the length of the programme, comes back to one question: will the mother-to-be be comfortable?
This guide explains what the ceremony means, when it is held and what it is called in other parts of India, then works through the planning: the venue, the rituals, the lap items, the food, the games and the gifts.
What is the meaning of godh bharai?
Godh means lap and bharai means filling. The ceremony is a way for the family, and especially its women, to welcome the baby before birth, to bless the mother-to-be with a safe delivery, and to show her she is cared for in the last months of her pregnancy.
The items placed in her lap carry the meaning. Fruit and a coconut stand for fertility and abundance, sweets for happiness, and new clothes for the new life ahead. In many families the mother-to-be's own mother sends the saree she wears for the ceremony.
Traditionally, godh bharai was a gathering of women only. Many families now include the father-to-be and the men of the family, at least for part of the day.

In which month is godh bharai done?
Most families hold the godh bharai in the seventh month of pregnancy. By then the pregnancy is well established, and the mother-to-be is usually still comfortable enough to enjoy a few hours with family.
Customs differ. Some families prefer the fifth month, some the eighth or ninth, and some prefer an odd-numbered month. Many consult a pandit for an auspicious date. If the mother-to-be will move to her parents' home for the delivery, the godh bharai is often held just before she goes.
Whatever the family's custom, check with her doctor if there are any complications, and choose a date she is happy with.
What is godh bharai called in different parts of India?
Almost every region has a ceremony for the mother-to-be, with its own name and its own details.
| Region | Name | A detail worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| North and Central India, including Madhya Pradesh | Godh bharai | The lap is filled with fruit, dry fruits, sweets and gifts |
| Maharashtra | Dohale Jevan | The mother-to-be is served the foods she has been craving |
| Gujarat | Shrimant or Simant | Usually held in the seventh month |
| Bengal | Shaadh | A meal of the dishes she loves, cooked by the family |
| Tamil Nadu | Valaikappu | Glass bangles are put on her wrists by the women of the family |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Seemantham | Includes prayers for the safe delivery of the baby |
What happens at a godh bharai ceremony?
The order varies from family to family. This is the shape most ceremonies follow.
- 01
Dressing
The mother-to-be dresses in a new saree or outfit, with flowers and light jewellery.
- 02
Seating
She is seated in a decorated chair or on a swing, with back support and her feet resting comfortably.
- 03
Puja
Some families begin with a short puja for the health of the mother and the baby.
- 04
Tilak and aarti
The elders of the family apply tilak and perform aarti.
- 05
Filling the lap
One by one, the women place fruit, sweets and gifts in her lap and give their blessings.
- 06
Food and games
A light meal, two or three games, and time for photographs.

What is put in the lap at a godh bharai?
The godh bharai thali is prepared before the ceremony and placed beside the mother-to-be. The usual items are below. Families add their own.
- A coconut, the central item in many families.
- Seasonal fruit, often in fives or sevens.
- Dry fruits: almonds, cashews, raisins and dates.
- Sweets, such as laddoos or peda.
- A new saree or outfit for the mother-to-be, and sometimes clothes for the baby.
- Bangles, flowers, and a little rice with haldi and kumkum.
How do you choose a venue for a godh bharai?
A home works for a small ceremony. For thirty guests or more, most families book a hall, and the checklist is different from any other party, because the guest of honour is seven months pregnant.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Air conditioning | Pregnancy makes the heat much harder to bear, especially from April to June |
| Ground-floor entry with no steps | Stairs are tiring and a fall is a real risk |
| A restroom close by | She will need it more often than any other guest |
| A chair with back support | She will be seated for most of the ceremony |
| A quiet corner or room | Somewhere to rest for a few minutes away from the crowd |
| Parking at the door | A short walk from the car to the hall |
| A daytime slot | Two to three hours, ending before she is tired |
What food should be served at a godh bharai?
Keep the menu light and mild, and plan it around what the mother-to-be wants to eat. In Maharashtra the whole ceremony is built on her cravings, and it is a lovely idea for any family to borrow.
A lunch or high tea suits the daytime slot: a few snacks, a simple thali or buffet, and one or two sweets. Make sure everything she eats is freshly cooked and served hot, and check with her about anything her doctor has asked her to avoid.
Which games are played at a godh bharai?
The best games can be played from a chair and finish in ten minutes. One thing to leave out: any game about guessing whether the baby is a boy or a girl. Sex determination before birth is illegal in India, and a game about it makes many families uncomfortable. These work instead.
- Guess the size of the bump with a length of ribbon.
- Baby name suggestions, collected in a bowl and read out by the parents.
- Baby photo match: guests guess which childhood photo is the mother or the father.
- Advice for the parents, written on cards and kept for later.
- A quiz about the parents-to-be, with questions from both families.
- Tambola, for a larger group of women who know the game.
What are good godh bharai gifts?
Gifts for the mother-to-be are traditional at a godh bharai: a saree, jewellery, or something for her comfort in the last months, such as a pregnancy pillow. Gifts for the baby, such as clothes, blankets or a cradle, are also common, though some families prefer to wait until after the birth. Ask the family which they prefer.
